The train, part 2

After secondary school I did not manage to go for further studies. So after doing nothing for a year I got a job with the government. I can only say that it is the only job I held until I retire. If you read my profile you'll know that I am reemployed doing the same job.

After I sat for my diploma examinations I was sent to Kelantan, of all places. Since I haven't bought any form of transport I took the train there. The only different this time was I rode first class as compared to third class during my school days. Since it was a night journey I was given a sleeping berth.

What a coincidence then because my school was about to be shifted lock, stock and barrel to Seremban at the same time. At the Seremban train station I saw a few members of my former school staff waiting for their school collegues and students from Tanjung Malim. One person I could not forget is En. Ahmad Tajuddin who would later stay in the same place with me in Taman Paroi Jaya.

The country especially the east coast had just recovered from floods so the train had to move slowly. Sometimes it had to stop at stations for quite a while to wait for on coming trains to pass. I remember we had to stop at Kuala Lipis, Pahang for about two hours.

The senery here was much different from my normal Tanjung Malim - Seremban route. I saw a lot of greenery as the train had to pass through thick jungle. The train had to pass through a number of tunnels too. But this time I could not perform my bottle throwing act.

The first stop at Kelantan was at Gua Musang. Sellers mostly women boarded the train trying to sell their products in the form of food, mainly fruits. Of course they spoke the Kelantanese dialect. It brought me back memories from my school days when my Kelantanese school friends spoke their dialect not only among themselves but to us non Kelantanese boys. Suddenly I realised that I was going to hear this dialect for some time from now.

When the train stopped at Krai which is the station for Kuala Krai more than half of the passengers disembarked. I was quite surprised at first. I saw a lot of taxis waiting to ferry them to their ultimate destinations.

After almost dusk my train stopped at Wakaf Baru the station for Kota Bharu. I had travelled for almost 2o hours on a train. To my surprise only a few people disembarked here. So I went to look for a taxi to carry me to Kota Bharu. There was none. I asked and was told that the only means of tranportation to Kota Bharu from this station was by the trishaw. So I rode a trishaw to Kota Bharu.

Only later I learned that at that time train passengers travelling to Kota Bharu from the west coast anf south would stop at Krai and from there continue their journey by taxis. This would be faster than stopping at Wakaf Baru. I don't know the situation now.

To be continued....the present.
